SRT Marine Technology in the News

Under the Radar
Another announcement at the smaller end of the market that went largely unnoticed came from Software Radio Technology, the digital wireless technology group.

The company has an interesting background. Originally it was an in-house developer of digital solutions owned by Securicor, until a chance conversation on a train led to a management buyout led by the current managing director Simon Tucker.

It is now heavily involved in the development of TETRA handsets and networks and identification signaling for the shipping industry.

TETRA is a global standard of digitally encrypted communication used primarily by security forces and emergency services. It allows users to communicate confidentially and is not reliant upon commercial airwaves.

On the shipping side, its technology allows coastguards and other shipping land users to fully identify other boats within its radar range rather than simply showing a dot on the screen.

Traders seem to have missed the crucial point that the US coastguard is fast tracking the technology into service, and there are 12 million private yachts in the US - all potential customers.

Last week's results showed the expected loss on revenue of £1.8m. But this technology has vast potential, and SRT's manufacturing deals in China can make it a serious player in a global market. Not for widows and orphans but worth a punt.
